Takato Yamamoto (1960-)

A JAPANESE ILLUSTRATOR BORN IN AKITA PREFECTURE

He is a renowned artist of fantastic painting. After graduating from the painting department of the Tokyo Zokei University in 1983, he worked part time for the commercials of Fujitsu as an advertising illustrator. In the 1990s, after seeing the exhibition of Tatsuhiko Shibusawa (a leading novelist, art critic, and translator of French literature)his interest in aesthetics was rekindled.

Since 1994, heexperimented with the Ukiyo-e Pop style. He further refined and developed his own style which he called “Heisei Estheticism,” made him a charismatic illustrator and a king of Japanese aesthetic arts. His painting shows the very presence of sex itself, intricately and symbolically expressing the vital force of seething sex in new images which transcend gender. Fans of his work are found throughout the world.

His work mainly seen in cover art and illustrations for aesthetic novels, fantasy novels, pornographic novels, and period novels, as well as CD jackets gained him wide recognition. He has also published many dedicated collections of his works.
